The St. George is an universal defence, playable against both 1.e4 and 1.d4. Its characteristic moves are....e6 and ....b5, followed by a queen-side fianchetto. The most famous victory using this opening was Karpov's defeat by Miles in the 1980 European Team Championship, the first time that a British player had defeated a reigning world champion for 20 years.
